Understanding PM-KUSUM: A Step Towards Sustainable Agriculture

The PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) is a Government of India initiative aimed at promoting solar energy use in the agricultural sector.

PM-KUSUM focuses on enhancing farmers’ energy independence while reducing their reliance on grid electricity and diesel.

Key Features:

  1. Solar Pumps: Installation of standalone solar pumps for irrigation in off-grid areas
  2. Solarization of Grid-Connected Pumps: Allows farmers to generate solar power and sell surplus electricity to the grid
  3. Solar Power Plants: Encourages farmers and cooperatives to install small-scale solar plants (up to 2 MW) on barren or semi-barren land

How It Helps Stakeholders:

  • Farmers: Reduces electricity and diesel costs, ensures uninterrupted irrigation, and provides an additional income source by selling excess solar power
  • Energy Sector: Eases the burden on state electricity grids by replacing conventional energy sources with renewable ones
  • Local Communities: Creates job opportunities in solar plant installation, maintenance, and operations

How this Initiative helps in Fighting Climate Change:

PM-KUSUM contributes to India’s renewable energy targets by increasing solar capacity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and decreasing fossil fuel dependence. It promotes sustainable farming practices while conserving groundwater, as solar pumps encourage judicious water usage.

By integrating clean energy into agriculture, PM-KUSUM benefits farmers, supports rural development, and strengthens India’s commitment to combating climate change.
