A Job….

The title may seem very trivial to many as we are acquainted to the term pretty well.

Despite this, I would like to state that it is not as straightforward as it seems. Let me elaborate further on this.

“A Job is an activity that brings monetary benefits for employing our skills and fulfilling assigned tasks”

General Understanding

Seems fairly well encompassed, doesn’t it?

Does this mean every job needs to bring monetary benefits? Can something that does not bring monetary benefits not be classified as job?

Some food for thought, isn’t it?

According to my understanding, there are three approaches to the term job:

  • Salary Based (Primary)
  • Career Based (Secondary)
  • Quest Based (Tertiary)

This can go very similar to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs but it is much more that

Let us look further into this:

  • Salary Based (Primary): This encompasses activities that help us earn money to meet our needs of housing, clothing, shelter etc.

  • Career Based (Secondary): Once our primary needs are out of the way, an individual will be more inclined to utilize his/her skills to have a better life through growth in their area and gain expertise

  • Quest Based (Tertiary): This is pretty unique stage as many individuals might never encounter this or end their journey on the secondary level. This stage comes through contemplation. An individual once having reached this might very well indulge into things which may or may not bring monetary benefits but add lot of personal satisfaction. Activities covered under this can be NGO work especially for welfare & sustainability, Awareness Programs, Entrepreneurial work etc. It is difficult to understand the rationale or passion till another person sees the world through the same wavelength

Quest Based Job: Something that adds value to life

Take your time to sit back and analyze: Where am I?

This is needed as life tends to go on autopilot for the large portion if we do not intervene! This reflection can throw light on where and what course correction is required. Life has more to it than living and this has been highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic where people have got in touch with their inner self and started hobbies which at one-time they were unable to find anytime for.
