Introduction
The global push toward net-zero emissions is creating a new opportunity for the ethanol industry. Traditionally, ethanol has been valued as a renewable fuel that can reduce dependence on gasoline. However, with carbon capture and storage (CCS), ethanol plants are now being reimagined as facilities capable of actively removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere.

The carbon capture process works in three stages:
- Capture: CO₂ generated during fermentation is separated at ethanol facilities.
- Transport: The captured CO₂ is compressed and transported through pipelines.

Because fermentation produces relatively pure CO₂, ethanol plants are among the lower-cost industrial sources for carbon capture compared with sectors like cement and steel.
Creating a Low-Carbon Fuel Industry
Carbon capture can significantly reduce the carbon intensity of ethanol, making it more attractive for markets that reward cleaner fuels. Lower-carbon ethanol could support emerging industries such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), where demand for low-emission fuels is increasing.

Biogenic ethanol carbon capture represents a broader transformation in the bioenergy sector. Ethanol plants may evolve from simply producing renewable fuels into carbon management facilities that both replace fossil fuels and remove atmospheric carbon.
While carbon capture alone cannot solve climate change, strategically deployed projects could become an important tool in reducing emissions from difficult-to-decarbonise sectors.
The future of ethanol may not only be about cleaner fuel – it could also be about turning agriculture into part of the global carbon removal solution.
