When Green Energy Goes Waste: India’s Renewable Energy Challenge

Introduction: Paradox of Clean Energy Growth

India has made remarkable progress in renewable energy, especially in solar and wind power.

However, a new challenge is emerging: sometimes the clean electricity generated cannot be fully used. This situation, known as renewable energy curtailment, happens when solar or wind power production is reduced because the grid cannot absorb or transport all the available electricity.

The irony is that while India needs more clean energy to reduce dependence on coal, some renewable energy is being wasted due to infrastructure limitations.

Why Is Green Energy Being Wasted?

One major reason is the mismatch between where renewable energy is produced and where it is consumed.

Large solar and wind projects are often located in states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, where renewable resources are abundant.

However, electricity demand is spread across the country, requiring strong transmission networks to move power efficiently.

India’s electricity grid was originally designed around predictable coal-based power generation. Solar and wind energy are different because they depend on weather conditions and generate power at varying times.

Without adequate transmission capacity, storage and flexible demand, excess renewable power cannot always be absorbed.

Impact of Renewable Energy Curtailment

Wasting renewable energy creates economic and environmental challenges. Developers lose potential revenue, while the country loses an opportunity to reduce fossil fuel consumption.

For example, reports have highlighted renewable energy losses due to transmission bottlenecks and grid constraints in India.

Such challenges could become larger as India continues expanding renewable capacity to meet its 2030 clean energy targets.

Steps India Is Taking to Reduce Wastage

1] Expanding Transmission Infrastructure

The government is investing in new transmission corridors under initiatives such as the Green Energy Corridor.

These projects aim to connect renewable energy-rich regions with major consumption centres.

2] Increasing Energy Storage

Battery storage and pumped hydro storage are becoming important solutions. Storage allows excess solar power generated during the day to be used during evening peak demand.

3] Promoting Renewable Energy Forecasting

Better forecasting technologies using artificial intelligence and advanced weather models can help grid operators manage fluctuations in renewable generation.

4] Encouraging Green Hydrogen

Excess renewable electricity can also be used to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis. This converts surplus electricity into a storable fuel that can support industries such as steel, chemicals and transport.

The Road Ahead

India’s renewable energy challenge is no longer only about generating more clean power. The next challenge is ensuring that every unit of clean electricity generated reaches consumers.

Building smarter grids, expanding storage and creating flexible energy systems will be essential for India to fully benefit from its renewable energy transition.
