Introduction
India is one of the largest footwear markets globally, with millions of pairs produced and discarded every year.
However, recycling footwear is significantly more difficult than recycling materials like PET bottles or paper because a single shoe is a complex assembly of multiple materials – leather, polyurethane (PU), EVA foam, rubber, textiles, adhesives, metals and synthetic coatings.
Some footwear products contain more than 40 different components, making separation extremely challenging.
Unlike plastic waste, where polymers can often be segregated and recycled at scale, end-of-life footwear is a mixed material stream with limited recycling infrastructure.
Understanding the Material Challenge: Leather, PU and Rubber
Different footwear materials require different recycling approaches:
Leather waste:
Leather scraps from manufacturing can be processed into bonded leather, fibre boards, fillers and other applications. However, post-consumer leather footwear is difficult to recycle due to contamination, tanning chemicals, stitching and adhesives.
PU (Polyurethane) foam and synthetic leather:
PU is widely used in soles, cushioning and artificial leather. Mechanical recycling generally results in low-value products, while advanced chemical recycling technologies can recover polyols from PU waste. However, these technologies require consistent feedstock and higher investment.
Rubber and EVA soles:
Grinding footwear into granules is one of the most established methods. Recovered rubber and foam can be used in playground surfaces, mats, insulation and flooring applications.
Most Practical Recycling Models for India
Considering India’s cost sensitivity and fragmented waste ecosystem, a fully automated “shoe-to-shoe” recycling model is unlikely to be viable in the near term.
More practical approaches include:
1. Collection + Reuse First Model
Good-condition footwear should be repaired, refurbished and donated through organised channels. Organisations such as Greensole have demonstrated models where old footwear is converted into usable products.
2. Mechanical Recycling of Mixed Footwear
Collected shoes can be shredded and processed into material blends for low-value applications. While not true circular recycling, it reduces landfill burden.
3. Material-Specific Recovery Hubs
Large footwear clusters such as Agra, Kanpur and Chennai can develop specialised collection and sorting centres where leather, PU, rubber and textiles are separated closer to the source.
Can Footwear Recycling Be Cost Viable in India?
A nationwide footwear recycling system faces three major barriers:
- High collection costs due to scattered household waste generation
- Labour-intensive sorting and dismantling
- Low market value of recovered mixed materials
The economically viable approach for India is likely a hybrid model:
- Brand-funded collection under sustainability/EPR commitments
- Regional processing centres near footwear manufacturing clusters
- Mechanical recycling for mixed footwear
- Premium recycling routes for separated PU, leather and rubber streams
A completely circular shoe where every component becomes a new shoe is still technically and economically challenging globally.
Future Opportunity: Designing Shoes for Recycling
The long-term solution is not only better recycling but better product design. Footwear manufacturers need to move towards:
- Fewer material combinations
- Reduced adhesive usage
- Modular designs
- Mono-material shoes
- Digital product passports for material tracking
India has an opportunity to build a footwear circular economy by combining informal sector collection networks, footwear industry participation and targeted recycling technologies rather than relying on expensive imported solutions.
